Why Trauma Makes You Inflamed
Jun 17, 2024
Trauma causes inflammation.
Here's how:
Our bodies have an innate capacity to heal.
This is obvious when we cut ourselves and very little is needed to assist in the wound healing process—and this same self-healing mechanism extends to every part of the body.
The other day I was reading for the hundredth time this article written by some of the most profound founders of Naturopathic Medicine.
The article, titled "Naturopathic Model of Healing—The Process of Healing Revisited" states that healing is a process of "reaction, elimination, and restoration" in response to disturbances in our baseline, normal health.
However, when disturbances to our health are "too great, too many, and/or too persistent," our innate healing process cannot take place.
This results in degeneration and chronic illness.
One of the initial responses to any disturbance to health is inflammation, as demonstrated in this image:
And trauma is no exception: "Because of the activation of the sympathetic nervous system [fight/ flight/ freeze/ or fawn], trauma triggers inflammation" which leads to "enduring elevations" of inflammation in the body.
"In the model of healing, psychosocial trauma is seen as a disturbance which triggers a reaction, activating the inflammatory response.
Evidence shows that healing occurs when ongoing trauma (disturbance) is removed and a health-promoting environment is established."
Here is an incomplete list of symptoms that can arise from chronic inflammation:
- Abdominal pain
- Anxiety
- Brain fog
- Chest pain
- Constipation
- Chronic fatigue
- Chronic infections
- Depression
- Diarrhea
- Fever
- Headaches/ migraines
- Heartburn
- Imbalance/ dizziness
- Insomnia
- Insulin resistance
- Joint pain/ stiffness
- Memory issues
- Mood disorders
- Mouth sores
- Muscle pain/ weakness
- Rashes
- Weight changes
...get the picture?
By addressing trauma, our vitality rises, the nervous system becomes unburdened, and the body can heal.
This is how and why I was able to completely heal my chronic illness, and you can, too.
Addressing trauma is a multi-layered process that involves the subconscious mind—meaning that talk therapy alone will not get you there, nor will most "brain retraining" programs that promote rote memorization and repetition of mantras.
Here's the takeaway:
Unaddressed trauma causing nervous system dysregulation is a majorly overlooked root cause that, if left unchecked, will always stand as a roadblock to achieving the health you want.
Reflecting on my own 10+ year healing journey and what has worked with my chronically ill clients, I created the framework for healing the intersection of trauma and illness. It's called Sacred Illness™, and you can access the entire framework within my Sacred Illness™ Program.
Inside this program, you will be guided step-by-step, learning how to flip on your innate self-healing capacity once more. Right now, you can access a 14-day free trial to try it out and see what you think—if you decide to stick around, membership is only $37/month after that.
